What is Mars Oasis?
The idea for Mars Oasis was conceived by Elon Musk in the early 2000s. The primary objective was straightforward: land a small greenhouse on Mars and then use automated processes to grow some crops. Footage of the plants growing would then be streamed back to Earth (along with lots of valuable scientific data), and those learnings could be used to make future mission decisions.
The secondary objective was even greater. People all around the world would see life growing on a hostile world and be inspired about science, space, and the future. Kids would want to be astronauts again. NASA would finally get the funding it deserves which would drive innovation not only in space, but in many other areas as well.
Elon put together a team and started this project, but was sidelined by the high cost of rockets (mostly because the Russians wouldn't sell him ICBMs). He decided to tackle the reusability problem instead. Without the work of SpaceX over the last 15 years, colonizing Mars would never be possible.
The Mars Missions in the upcoming decades are vitally important to the long-term survival of our species. We must not let the light of human consciousness be extinguished. The goal of the Mars Oasis project is simple: continue building on the vision that Elon Musk laid out before starting SpaceX. Mars Oasis will be the first to grow plants on Mars. And we will bring agriculture into the future in the process.
